Interview: Carmelita Yumito – the queen of Sinuca

Carmelita Yumito
When we think of Brazil many of us will rather think of Samba or the Rio Carnival, than of snooker, but surprise!!! Snooker plays a big part in Brazilians` life, for here snooker has even developed a new way of being played – Sinuca.
Sinuca is Brazil’s way of saying “We love snooker!” and they truly do; so much, that they’ve invented a new way of playing snooker as their national tribute to this wonderful sport.

Today, I want to share with all of you the story of a genuine champion, a very passionate person and a very good Sinuca, but also snooker, player from Brazil. Her name is Carmelita Yumito and she’s my inspiration for today.

Born in 1970 in Tauá (the state city of Ceará, from North East of Brazil), Carmelita was raised in a modest family, being the youngest of nine brothers. Nowadays she is happily married, having a family of her own (two teenagers – Camila Toshie Yumito who’s 17 years old and Gabriel Kazuichi Yumito, who’s 16 years old) and although having a family is not an easy task, she still finds time for snooker and for winning one shiny trophy after another.

Always with a big smile on her face, Carmelita has find a way to balance her family life with her profession, that as we all know it’s a very demanding one. Tons of hours spent practicing new techniques and improving her skills, hundreds of kilometres on the road taking part in tournaments – that’s what’s going on when Carmelita is away from her beloved family.

1985 is a year that will stay forever in Carmelita’s heart for that was the year when everything started to fall into the right place and when she had her first encounter with Sinuca.

Remembering those moments with an enormous pleasure, Carmelita tells me: “In 1985 I moved to Guarulhos (the state city of São Paulo) and I got a job as a waitress at Hobby Time Snooker and Chopperia. It was love at first sight, that’s the moment when I felt in love with Sinuca!!! I started to take lessons about the rules and the techniques of the game and after a while a found myself taking part in un-official competitions.

To make everything clear, I just want to say that in Brazil “snooker” and “sinuca” have the same meaning, the thing that puts a difference being the fact that we say “English version” for snooker. This is actually a mix between adapting the official English version of snooker and the national version of the game.

My career started with me playing by the national rule of the game, because that was the rule allowed in the competitions, but it was not until 1997 when I’ve begun to play by the English rule at the first edition of the Santos Cup.

So I guess the confusion about what’s Sinuca is history now thanks to Carmelita, but I was curious to know what version of the game was more popular in Brazil and why.

Sinuca, my love
Sinuca is indeed more popular because it was created here and that’s why it is more known by the public and the players. On the other hand, the English version, although not very popular around here, has a great deal of admires in Brazil.”, said Carmelita who also stated that as far as she’s concerned: “I’m more pleased to play by the English version, because it’s much more technical and at the moment it is the official rule for the majority of the tournaments in Brazil.

Snooker Loopy: I have a special section for each interview that I make; it is called “It’s bragging time!!!” and here you can share with our readers all your achievements as a Sinuca/Snooker player (titles, breaks, competitions that you’ve won, anything you would like people to know about you as a player) :-)

Carmelita Yumito: “In 1996 I took part at the first Paulista Ladies Championship of Sinuca and I won it. That was my first title as an official champion.
After that I’ve worked real hard to improve my skills and that has resumed in other winnings like: being a nine-time champion of the Paulista Championship (1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010), winning the PENTA National Circuit Cup of Brazil, two-time champion of both IPÊ Cup and Guarulhos Cup, champion of the Volkswagen Cup, winning the 13th Miami Snooker Summer Sinuca Championship (we were 32 participants and I was the only female player) and the most important title of my career: being a four-time winner of the TETRA Brazilian Championship (2002, 2004, 2099 and 2010).

Right now, I’m ranked on the first place in the Brazilian Paulista rankings.

With this tremendous collection of titles one could think that Carmelita Yumito is excessively proud of her and thinks she is above everyone else, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Although she is very aware of her value as a snooker/sinuca player and takes every victory as a fully deserved one, she is a very modest person.
Actually I asked her if Igor Figueiredo is one of the best Brazilian players for snooker, she could be considered as the best Brazilian player of sinuca, and you know what she replayed?
I think I’m not the right person to answer that question, so maybe you should ask Igor. However, considering the amount of titles that I’ve won over the years, I could say I am.

Moving on to snooker in Brazil, we all know that Barry Hearn, the chairman of World Snooker has already set everything up for the first edition of the Brazilian Masters to take place this Autumn in São Paulo. As a visionary, Mr. Hearn saw the potential this country has as a snooker ramp and that’s one of the biggest chances that the very well trained snooker players will have to speculate in order to make their breakthrough.

Carmelita in action
Carmelita sees this as a very good opportunity both for the players and the sport itself. “The idea of having a competition as the Brazilian Masters is absolutely incredible and I’m very excited about it. Without any doubt it could mean a genuine chance for the Brazilian players to take part at international tournaments in the near future.

And to end out trip to Brazil but also to get to know a bit more about Carmelita’s dreams and expectation let’s go on with the “fast questions”.

Snooker Loopy: I’m sure you have your own favourite sinuca/snooker players; maybe some of them have even inspired you to choose this path in life. Please tell me which players do you admire and you’d like to play against some day?

Carmelita Yumito: “It`s a sure thing that I admire many, many players. Igor Figueiredo is one of them, more since he is a very close friend of mine, but also I admire Steve Davis and Ronnie O`Sullivan. They are the ones that I would very much like to meet personally. Also, I hope to be able to play with Alisson Fisher and Janet Lee one day.

Snooker Loopy: If you were to pick a moment in your career, the most important one, what would it be?

Carmelita Yumito: “I would definitely pick the last Brazilian Championship that was held in my hometown. Being there surrounded by my family and closest friends that have supported me throughout my career and were so proud to see me playing was just wonderful. I won my 2010 TETRA Brazilian Championship that time.

Snooker Loopy: Do you have future plans regarding your career with Sinuca?

Carmelita Yumito: “I just want to keep on practicing and dedicate my time to improve my sinuca game, to take part in as many tournaments as possible, to find a sponsor that could hep me participate in international competitions and to share my experience and train other people who want to make it as a professional player. Actually I held classes already in one of the best Sinuca clubs from Sao Paulo. Who knows, maybe I’m coaching the future champion?!"

At the moment I’m employed by Pompeia Snooker Bar to give lessons only for women, every Wednesday from 8:00-12:00pm just to encourage them and rise the number of female Sinuca players.

Snooker Loopy: What advice would you give to a youngster that wants to start playing classical snooker or sinuca?

Carmelita Yumito: “My advice to any youngster is to show the spot that same dedication and respect that I’ve had for Sinuca and to keep going no matter what; to keep on fighting, because Sinuca is sport and sport is life.

Coaching the girls
She couldn’t have said it any better: sport means life and her life is playing Sinuca. This is her dream and this is what she loves to do. As a female player in a sport that’s dominated by the males is not that easy, but still Carmelita carries on because she believes in herself and her ambition and talent are assets that can’t be bought.

For me, to talk with Carmelita was a lesson of life. Maybe she could start giving these types of lessons as well as Sinuca ones. :-)) My readers know that I always admire a player that never gives up, that keeps on improving his game that resists the temptation of going out with his friends and stays on the practicing table. That’s how a genuine player looks for me and Carmelita Yumita is one hell of a player :-)

I bet we shall hear a lot more about her in the future and before you go on saying that I’ve eulogized another player, just take a minute and consider what her achievements are and what a strong and determined person she is … and then, you’ll realise she deserves every world I wrote about her.
Here’s to my favourite Sinuca player, Carmelita Yumito – the queen of Sinuca! :-)

Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers 2011 - Day 2

02:31:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Who dares to mess with Tian?
The second day of these very exiting Australian qualifiers didn't vary too much from the first day and that's because the Chinese players were at their best ... again. :-) Excepting the two Liu's of the competition (Chuang and Song) who lost their matches, but also Xiao Guodong, the rest of the remaining Chinese army has taken down one opponent after another.
The one that has shinned and can be easily named the star of the day is without doubt Tian Pengfei. The 23 year-old player hit three tons to win 5-1 over Scotland's Anthony McGill (104, 107 and 113). Totally amazing!

Sadly for the proud of Finland, Robin Hull wasn't so lucky and although he hit two marvelous century breaks (111, 100) he still found himself being defeated 5-2 by Jack Lisowski; this also being the case of Ian McCulloch, who succeeded to overcome Hull's highest break of these qualifiers (136) and replaced it with a gorgeous 141. However it wasn't enough: he lost 5-3 to Ben Woollaston. This is one of the reasons why I think that each snooker match is a genuine lesson of life - you can do all the right things and still lose. ;-)

Plenty of reason to smile, Jimmy ;-)
On a more positive note, our beloved Jimmy "The Whirlwind" White has had a pretty good start, winning 5-2 over the Scottish Paul Davison (hm ... a bit of 2011 World Open history repeating there), while his namesake, Jimmy Robertson performed the same scoreline over Andrew Pagett. White will face Rory McLeod in Round Three - this should be interesting ... man, I would kill to see this match :-)))
Another brilliant victory was cashed by Kurt Maflin, Norway's ambassador beating Peter Lines 5-3 to set a meeting with Michael Holt in the next round, but unfortunately this can't be said about James Wattana, the sensational Thai losing a very tight battle with Matt Couch 5-4.

Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers 2011 - Day 1

12:54:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Li Yan takes victory
The qualifying rounds for the brand new Australian Goldfields Open are underway and yesterday marked the first day of the snooker battle of cues.

It can be easily said that the Chinese have made their country proud, as no more than three out of four players have qualified for the second round of this tour de force. While Cao Yupeng was strategically hammered by the mighty and very ambitious Kurt Maflin 5-1, Yu Delu succeeded to win the decider against Michael White, Tian Pengfei did the same thing in front of the powerful Indian Aditya Mehta and Li Yan found no problem in whitewashing the Polish player that has only started his run on the Main Tour, Kacper Filipiak 5-0.

On the other hand, Belgium's snooker ambassadors weren't so lucky, both Luca Brecel and Bjorn Haneever losing their first round of cue action; the youngster Luca being defeated 5-1 by another youngster, Sam Baird, while Bjorn lost 5-3 to the Pink Army member, Andrew Norman.

Robin Hull in action
The Finnish player that managed to earn himself a sport on the Main Tour by winning the first event of the recently ended Q School, is up for a wonderful start as he hammered a very dangerous opponent, Dechawat Poomjaeng 5-1 (he also hit the highest break so far, a great 136), while this season wild card James Wattana put an end to Daniel Wells' dream of going further in the competition with a 5-2 scoreline.
A very tight battle was given between the Thai Passakorn Suwannawat and the Derby's player David Gilbert, both of the players hitting a century break during the whole process (Passakorn 114, Gilbert 112). In the end the Englishman seemed to be better prepared for the victory and now, he'll face Alfie Burden in round two.

Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers 2011 - start jumping!

16:50:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

What are you doing there, mate?
Come on! We have to start training! Start jumping up and down like a crazy kangaroo! Come on, you can do it! Oooops, sorry that wasn't supposed to go this way. We aren't in Australia ... not yet at least. ;-)
However, we must train, and what a best way to do it than to start the qualifiers for this brand new ranking tournament from Down Under?!

Yep, today the qualifiers are underway as the snooker players are starting their battle of cues in Sheffield, the home of snooker. The World Snooker Academy has opened its doors once again and let in all those who are ready for the kill. Although the new event from Australia is a perfect occasion to travel more, it's also a pretty hard test of endurance: I mean, the hours you spend flying, the different timeline, the fact that you must be ready for action as soon as you arrive there ... those are pretty hard tasks.

So, for those who weren’t fortunate enough as to get a place into the TOP 16, the qualifiers is the perfect way to get some more practice and earn a sport into the 2011 Australia Goldfields Open. Pretty excitement times, don't you think?

We already have two wildcards that will take part at this amazing event, two brave snooker players from Australia, who by the way are also brothers (the brotherhood of snooker in action ;-) ). Steve Mifsud is a top amateur player that won the 2002 World Amateur Championship, while his brother James Mifsud won the City of Melbourne tournament.

However, I'll stop here with the info and let you "admire" Day 1 schedule and the first results. As you can see the rule at hand is “the best of 9” ;-)

10am
3. Sam Baird 5 - 1 Luca Brecel
4. Andrew Pagett 5 - 4 Adam Wicheard
5. Paul Davison 5 - 3 David Hogan
6. Bjorn Haneveer 3 - 5 Andrew Norman
7. Joe Meara 3 - 5 David Morris
8. Michael White 4 - 5 Yu Delu

2.30pm
9. Dechawat Poomjaeng v. Robin Hull
10. Cao Yupeng v. Kurt Malin
11. Sam Craigie v. David Grace
12. Aditya Mehta v. Tian Pengfei

7pm
13. Ben Woollaston v. Adam Duffy
14. Scott MacKenzie v. Stuart Carrington
15. Kacper Filipiak v. Li Yan
16. Liam Highfield v. Simon Bedford
17. Passakorn Suwannawat v. David Gilbert
18. Daniel Wells v. James Wattana

See you tonight for the story of the first day!!!

Australian Goldfields Open (etapa de calificare) 2011 - toata lumea sare!

16:49:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Ce faci acolo prietene?
Haideti! Sus si jos! Sariti ca niste canguri! The house is on fire, the house is on fire! Aaaa, asta era din alt scenariu ... :-))

Ora 12:00
3. Sam Baird 5 - 1 Luca Brecel
4. Andrew Pagett 5 - 4 Adam Wicheard
5. Paul Davison 5 - 3 David Hogan

7. Joe Meara 3 - 5 David Morris
8. Michael White 4 - 5 Yu Delu

Ora 16:30

New amendments to snooker rules

15:57:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Today, World Snooker has made official the new amendments for snooker and billiards. But since this blog is entirely and totally devoted to snooker, we shall cover only the ones that affect our beloved snooker sport.

Here you have a Word document that captures three essential chapters: the first one related to the classical snooker and what's new about it, the second one makes reference to the alternative ways of playing snooker (see the Shoot-Out event), while chapter three covers billiards entirely.

Below, you shall find a summary of "what's new in town" about snooker. Give it a glance and then comment if you think the new amendments are better or worse than the old ones. By the way, there's something about the "Miss Rule", you may want check on that, for I know many of you have been crying for years about it ;-)

SECTION 2:

5. Striker and Turn
The person about to play or in play is the striker and remains so until the final stroke, or foul, of his turn is complete and the referee is satisfied that he has finally left the table. If a non-striker comes to the table, out of turn, he shall be considered as the striker for any foul he may commit before leaving the table. When the referee is satisfied that the above conditions have been met, the incoming striker's turn begins. His turn and his right to play another stroke ends when:
(a) he fails to score from a stroke; or
(b) he commits a foul; or
(c) he requests the opponent to play again after his opponent has committed a foul.

6. Stroke
(a) A stroke is made when the striker strikes the cue-ball with the tip of the cue.
(b) A stroke is fair when no infringement of Rule is made.
(c) A stroke is not completed until:
(i) all balls have come to rest;
(ii) the striker has stood up, in readiness for a succeeding stroke, or leaving the table;
(iii) any equipment being used by the striker has been removed from a hazardous position; and
(iv) the referee has called any score relevant to the stroke.
(d) A stroke may be made directly or indirectly, thus:
(i) a stroke is direct when the cue-ball strikes an object ball without first striking a cushion;
(ii) a stroke is indirect when the cue-ball strikes one or more cushions before striking an object ball.
(e) Following the final stroke of the opponent's turn, if an incoming player plays a stroke/strikes the cue-ball before the balls have come to rest, he shall be penalised as if he were the striker, and his visit to the table shall end.

SECTION 3:

8. Touching Ball
(g) If a stationary object ball, not touching the cue-ball when examined by the referee, is later seen to be in contact with the cue-ball before a stroke has been made, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction. This also applies to a touching ball which later, when examined by the referee is not touching, the balls shall be repositioned by the referee to his satisfaction.

13. Play Again
Once a player has requested an opponent to play again after a foul or requested the replacement of ball(s) after a Foul and a Miss, such request cannot be withdrawn. The offender, having been asked to play again, is entitled to:
(a) change his mind as to:
(i) which stroke he will play; and
(ii) which ball on he will attempt to hit;
(b) score points for any ball or balls he may pot.

14. Foul and a Miss
(b) If the striker, in making a stroke, fails to first hit a ball on when there is a clear path in a straight line from the cue-ball to any part of any ball that is or could be on, the referee shall call FOUL AND A MISS, unless:
(i) any player needed penalty points before, or as a result of, the stroke being played; (see (b) (ii)
(ii) before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black;
and the referee is satisfied that the miss was not intentional.

(d) After the cue-ball has been replaced under this Rule, and the striker fouls any ball, including the cue-ball while preparing to play a stroke, a miss will not be called if a stroke has not been played. In this case the appropriate penalty will be imposed; and the ball on shall be the same as prior to the last stroke made, namely:
(i) any Red, where Red was the ball on;
(ii) the colour on, where all Reds were off the table; or
(iii) a colour of the striker's choice, where the ball on was a colour after a Red had been potted;
and
(iv) the next player may elect to play the stroke himself or ask the offender to play again from the position left; or
(v) the next player may ask the referee to replace all balls moved to their original position and have the offender play again from there; and
(vi) if the above situation arises during a sequence of miss calls, any warning concerning the possible awarding of the frame to his opponent shall remain in effect.
(e) All other misses will be called at the discretion of the referee, unless, before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black.

PTC Event One 2011 - Ronnie rocks victoriously

14:42:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Ronnie O'Sullivan wins 2011 PTC 1
After two days of qualifications and three more of intense cue action, the time has come to pick ourselves a champion. The name of the man that made it happen is Ronnie O'Sullivan, the three-time world champion and "not in such a great form" last season player. Breaking through the ice, the man from Essex succeeded in taking down all his opponents, one by one, in order to win the Players Tour Championship Event One.

Last year, he came very near to win himself one of the six PTC events, but he sadly lost in the final against Barry Pinches. However, this time things were different, so different that the Rocket performed a whitewash on poor Joe Perry, who really had a marvelous run during this event. All things considered and as O'Sullivan said "Everyone was rusty.", one must never underestimate his talent and his ambition. He had a perfect run and proves he is still up for the champion job.

To reach the final, he defeated Martin Gould, Stuart Bingham and Joe Jogia 4-2, before ending on a perfect victory with Joe Perry. During the final, he provoked a rain of beautiful breaks, numbers like 60, 105 and 117 being the little stars of the moment.
After the victory, he declared for World Snooker that he is pleased with his game, still seeing his psychiatrist and still giving himself a shot with each tournament that he plays in. Seems to be he is in a better mood than last season and that's going to make a huge difference when he goes out there for a match. That maximum break intent he made in the match against Joe Jogia, although stopped by a stubborn yellow at just 120, makes it clear that Ronnie is prepared for a new season and if he really sets his mind to it, he can move mountains.

Joe Perry, 2011PTC Event One runner-up
Still, the PTC Event One is not just about the champion, so please bare with me a few moments, to see who else has shined during this first tournament.
Joe Perry, is one! Yes, sir! We all know he didn’t have the best last season, but he seems pretty much determined to change that and stop winning his glory back. He passed over the powerful James Wattana 4-0, over Jamie Jones 4-1 and Graeme Dott 4-2, to set that final with O'Sullivan.
Also, one must never disregard players like Graeme Dott or Joe Jogia, who played their part in a brilliant way, showing that while the top favorites haven't entered in the "zone", they want to recover all the time they lost not being in a great form. And they did it!

For me, this PTC was a statement that the youngsters are ready for the kill and the players that didn't shine too much last season are back. Of course that we must always keep in mind the fact that for the next tournament the rustiness of certain players may vanish into air, and that's going to the real test of strength for those who rocked during this first PTC, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. For now, they made a spectacular job and hopefully their performance will continue all season.

My sincere congratulations for Ronnie O'Sullivan for returning to that beautiful form we all know he is capable of, but also to all the players that kept their heads still and their mind focused on the game these last five days. Snooker is proud of its boys! :-)

PTC 1 (2011) - Ronnie O'Sullivan triumfa la Sheffield

14:42:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Ronnie O'Sullivan, campion PTC 1 (2011)

In primul rand trebuie sa il mentionez pe finalist, Joe Perry. Cu un 4-0 obtinut in fata lui James Wattana in optimi, un 4-1 in fata lui Jamie Jones in sferturi si un 4-2 in fata lui Graeme Dott in semifinala, "Gentleman-ul" snooker-ului parte determinat sa recupereze un sezon trecut nu prea stralucit.

Joe Perry, finalist PTC 1 (2011)

PTC Event One 2011 - Day 4

The unstoppable Wattana
Yesterday the madness continued as more Top 16 residents (and beyond) were kicked out of the PTC Event One. Kicked out is practically a bit too strong, they just lost their matches ... well, to be more precise, they lost their FIRST match. This happened for Mark Williams, who lost 4-3 to Li Yan, as well as for Stephen Hendry who was defeated by Kyren Wilson. The legendary "Nugget", Steve Davis saw himself being hammered 4-1 by James Wattana, Ryan Day was eliminated by Simon Bedford, 4-3 and as for the "Magician" Murphy, he lost 4-3 to Nick Jennings.

Although they rocked around the snooker table during the qualifiers, Ben Harrison and Allan Taylor were also stopped from advancing into the competition, Ben being totally whitewashed by Mark Joyce, while Allen lost the decider against Joe Swail.

However, moving on to the group that made it all the way to the Last 16 round, I must firstly mention James Wattana, the Thai who started his day by winning 4-1 over Steve Davis, continued with a tight 4-3 over Liu Yan and hammered Mike Dunn at the end of the day, but also Joe Perry, who really seems to be kicking, defeating Sanderson Lam 4-0, Mark Joyce 4-2 and Tom Ford 4-3.

The Irish Fergal O'Brien had an amazing run after passing with a 4-2 lead over Darren Bond and Simon Bedford and with a 4-1 scoreline over Joe Swail, Jamie Jones proved he means serious business after winning 4-0 over Shane Castle and 4-2 over his last two opponents, Cao Yupeng and Peter Lines, while Liam Highfield followed the pattern of 4-2 against Chen Zhe and Andrew Paggett, only to end his runs with a 4-0 scoreline in the match he played with Scott MacKenzie.

Graeme Dott is in great form
The Chinese Xiao Guodong seems to be in great form, after he crashed James Murdoch 4-0, hammered Adam Wicheard 4-1 and ended on a very tight 4-3 with Kurt Maflin. It must be said that Kurt had a pretty amazing run, as he won both of his matches and succeeded in coming back from a 2-0 lead in his last snooker encounter with Xiao; unfortunately he lost that last battle, but he is definitely to be considered for the next PTC event.

I saved the best for last, because it was really nice to see these two players making their way through the crowded Sheffield’s arena directly into the Last 16. Grame Dott, the Scotsman that didn’t have a pretty good last season, succeeded to obtain a clear victory of 4-0 over Sam Baird, continued with a 4-2 scoreline over Dominic Dale and ended his run with a marvelous and very impressive 4-0 over the one and only Stephen Lee.
The same can be said about our favorite "singer", Robbie Williams. He put an end to Peter Ebdon`s run with a 4-2 result, defeated a very well prepared Nick Jennings by the same scoreline, only to end in full glory the night and beat Ali Carter using the same strategy result. Brilliant performance!

PTC Event One 2011 - Day 3

18:33:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Three Scots - three dreams
As you all know yesterday was the first day that marked the entrance of the professionals into Sheffield’s snooker arena, but what do you know? Not every one of them has produced fireworks at the end of their battles of cues.

That’s the case of the current world champion, John Higgins but also Judd Trump’s (the 2011World Championship runner-up), both of them being eliminated from the very first round. Higgins lost in front of the Thai Dechawat Poomjaeng by a tight 4-3, while Trump saw himself being hammered by David Gilbert 4-1. Quite a shock, huh? Well, that’s the high standard speaking, as well as the "I've haven't entered the zone yet" mood ... at least, that’s what I think.

Moving on to the eight players that made it though the final stages of this first PTC event, I have to say that Scotland can be proud, as Stephen Maguire, Marcus Campbell and Eden Sharav are among those who cached one victory after another.

The Rocket is in great form
Maguire started his day with a very tense battle, but he succeeded to finally beat Matthew Day 4-3, only to see him putting in the corner both Jack Lisowski and the mighty Mark Selby with a 4-2 scoreline. He means business! ;-)
Campbell’s first match was given against a fellow-countryman, Paul Davison whom he beat 4-3, the last two being half Scottish, half Thai as he won 4-1 over Passakorn Suwannawat and 4-2 over Dechawat Poomjaeng.
As for the youngster Eden Sharav, he started by whitewashing the one and only Liang Wenbo, continued with a decisive 4-1 against Adam Duffy and finally concluded his perfect day with a 4-2 over Gary Wilson. You better watch out for this boy!

A very nice surprise was offered by the mighty Rocket Ronnie O`Sullivan, the three-time world champion earning a spot in the Last 16, after he defeated Mike Hallet 4-2, hammered Andy Hicks 4-1 and crashed Belgium’s star Bjorn Haneveer 4-0 (a "tiny" break of 132 was part of the equation here :-P).

Not a very good day for White and Holt
Martin Gould seems to be having a ball, as he eliminated Jamie Barrett 4-2 and ended on a decider with Matthew Selt and Nigel Bond 4-3, this suggesting he is ready for the kill. But that could also be said about Stuart Bingham, the Englishman winning 4-0 over Andrew Milliard and Jamie Burnett and 4-3 over Mark Davis, while Joe Jogia put his foot on the ground, taking control with a 4-0 lead over Daniel Wells, 4-1 over the Chinese Liu Chuang and a 4-2 over Michael Holt.

Yesterday was a loooong night for snooker, but it is said that at night one takes the wisest decisions (ok, ok, so maybe it’s a superstition). However, for David Gilbert the night meant he is guaranteed a place into the Last 16, as he succeeded to win 4-1 over Juddy Trump, 4-2 over Jamie Cope and 4-1 over the legendary Jimmy White.
And since we are on "the Whirlwind" subject, I must add that Jimmy was pretty unlucky, as he defeated David Morris 4-3, succeeded to do the same in the match against Alan McManus (after being lead 3-1), but sadly couldn’t repeat the performance a third time. That is also the case of Michael Holt, who hit no more than three century breaks (103, 106 and 117) in his fist match against David Gray, whom he beat 4-1, won 4-2 over Matthew Couch, only to see himself lose the final battle in front a more powerful Joe Jogia.

PTC 1 (2011) - Ziua 3

18:31:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Cei trei crai scotieni

"Racheta" s-a lansat fara probleme

PTC Event One 2011 - Day 2

Allan Taylor is ready for the kill
The second day of the Players Tour Championship Event One concludes the qualifying rounds and starting from Monday the pros will pick up their cues and play against each other, as well as against the amateurs that survived the two days` test.
Although there have been a few surprises here and there, the majority of the players that are ready to start genuine battles of cues with the heavy names in the business are the ones that have had sensational performances during these last past weeks.

Allan Taylor has booked himself a place next to the snooker stars after defeating the Indian Shahram Changezi 4-2, Ben Harrison continued his wonderful run and beat Joel Walker by the same scoreline, while Kyren Wilson absolutely crashed his last opponent Ian Stark by a 4-0 result.

Great start for Zhang Anda
Surprisingly Michael Judge found himself being eliminated from the first PTC event after Farakh Ajaib put him in the corner with a 4-0 scoreline, while Reanne Evans was pretty unfortunate to win her first match (4-2 with Chris Keogan), but lose the second one (and ironically by the same 4-2, this time in favor of Ian Glover).

The clash between Alex Taubman and Shane Castle ended with Shane earning a spot in the main competition, while the snooker encounter that Sam Harvey had with Robbie Williams meant the "singer" will definitely be playing in the next round after defeating Sam 4-3.

Some wonderful cue action was noticed in the corner where Chris Norbury was playing, the Englishman whitewashing both of his opponents, 4-0 with James Cahill and Danny Brindle, while China’s star Anda Zhang took control over Ryan Causton with a 4-2 scoreline and eliminated Michael Wild with a defining 4-0.

Also, I can’t overlook Nick Jennings` great form, the player defeating James Welsh 4-2 in order to meet the Magician Murphy up next and Craig Steadman’s cue action who hammered Callum Downing 4-1 and crashed Ashtley Wright 4-0 for a match against Adrian Gunnell. And since we are on the "what pro I shall meet in my first round", Justin Ashley’s confidence brought him one step close to an encounter with Ricky Walden, after he won 4-0 over Jack Bradford and Andrew Rogers.
