Premier League 2011 (week four) - Rocket rocks in Doncaster

14:14:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Rocket Ronnie rocks
Ronnie O'Sullivan was crowned the king of Premier League's forth week of cue action after crashing Matthew Stevens 3-0 in the semi-final and beating the "Captain" Ali Carter by 3-1 in the final. With the 6 points that he earned last night added to his previous 2, the "Rocket" flies directly to the top of the list.

The Dome always welcomes snooker and this time snooker was going to repay it by putting quite a show. Both semi-finals were played at full speed and although the final wasn't exactly what we expected it to be (the rhythm seemed lost), the final frame was surely something many of us didn't see in a long time ( for some it might have even been a first!)

Matt Stevens, not thrilled by the whitewash
The first semi-final featured the names of Ronnie O'Sullivan and Matthew Stevens, but as we were still getting used with the cue action ... puf! it ended. After 28 minutes, O'Sullivan's breaks of 47 and 94 represented the perfect ticket to the final. He obtained a clear victory of 3-0 over the 'Welsh Dragon" that didn't get too much time table and seemed to be doomed to stay in his seat.

A few minutes later another two snooker gladiators were entering the arena: Ding Junhui and Ali Carter. And what do you know? Although this was Carter's first match in the Premier League, he managed to win it in the best possible way: by performing the second whitewash of the night, 3-0 against the "Chinese Sensation".
With breaks of 44, 50, 70 and 91 the "Captain" was due to meet the "Rocket".

Ding Junhui, second man to be crashed 3-0
After such a thrilling and fast show many of us thought the fun will continue ... but it didn't. The first two frames of the final were scrappy, making the scoreline go 1-1. Still, O'Sullivan's break of 68 from the third frame added some more spice to the game and considering players' latest performances I, personally, thought they will go all the way.

And maybe they would have gone, if Carter wouldn't have missed to hit a red ball three times on a row although more than one ball was visible. He threw that frame away and the match, for that matter.

A good run for Carter ... but it ended totally wrong
And so the final ended on Ronnie's favour (3-1), although something tells me the "Rocket" would have wanted to obtained that victory in a totally different way. But, in the end a win is a win, no matter what. Too bad it had to end like that for Ali, who cued beautifully last night.

So, after four weeks of action the best man seems to be O'Sullivan, who has 8 points, followed by Mark Williams, Matthew Stevens, Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson, all with 6 points. Ding Junhui and Ali Carter have 4 points each, John Higgins only 3, while Jimmy White has yet to collect one.

The Premier League caravan will make its next stop at Weston-Super-Mare on October the 6th, when Mark Williams will face Judd Trump, while John Higgins will take on Matthew Stevens.

Premier League knocks on Doncaster's door

12:24:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Doncaster
"Knock, knock!" "Who's there?" "It’s the Snooker's Premier League. We've come for our forth week of cue action." "Come in, come in, we are all waiting for you. I'm sure we'll have a ball."

As you can imagine, because Thursday is the name of the day, the Premier League caravan is on the road again and this time it will make a stop in the beautiful town of Doncaster. The absolute king of the Premier League, Ronnie O'Sullivan, will face the man who rocked during week one of this lovely competition, Matthew Stevens, while Ding Junhui will take on the "Captain" Ali Carter.

For O'Sullivan this is his second match, his first appearance being during Premier League's second week of action. Back then things didn't go as planned for the "Rocket", who lost the decisive frame of the semis to Shaun Murphy, this earning him only 2 points.
However, I'm sure he'll try his best to reach tonight’s final and even win it. And just between you and me, I don’t think he needs to try so hard ... after all, he is the master of fast snooker.

Rocket v. Welsh Dragon
Matthew Stevens was the one who blew our minds away during Premier League's first week, when he was on fire. He performed two whitewashes in just one night, first by putting Neil Robertson in the corner and then by beating the current world champion, John Higgins in the final. It was a smashing victory for the Welshman and the most perfect start for a new season of Premier League snooker. Hopefully he'll keep up that beautiful performance tonight, because although he's on top of list with 6 points, the snooker caravan has plenty stops to make and each match is important.

Ding will face the "Captain" Carter
"The Chinese Sensation" Ding Junhui had a pretty good start during last week series of matches, even though he didn't win the final. But he did manage to end on a great decider against Shaun Murphy, whom he beat 3-2. However, he was hammered by the revived Neil Robertson 3-1, this leaving him with 4 points. That's not bad, but I have the strange feeling that the little Chinese player wants more. Good choice, Ding!

Ali Carter will be at his first Premier League appearance so a good impression is vital. Not just for the fans as much as for his self-confidence. Although Neil Robertson had a very poor start, this making him to literally rock around the snooker table last week and win the weekly competition's final, it is best to be safe and win as much as you can. So best of luck to the Captain.

The cue action will start at 7.30pm (UK time) on SkySports 1 and below you can check the schedule:

SF1: Ronnie O'Sullivan v. Matthew Stevens
SF2: Ding Junhui v. Ali Carter
Final: O'Sullivan/Stevens v. Ding/Carter

Players Tour Championship Event 6 (2011) - preview

23:59:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

As September is coming to an end we are flying to Poland for the Players Tour Championship Event 6. The beautiful and full of history capital, Warsaw, will be sniffing snooker for the next four days. A great line-up of players, internationally known, as well as Poland's local stars will engage in a genuine battle of cues for the tournament that precedes the seedings cut-off point.

Until now, we have five different winners for each PTC event. This year's series started with Ronnie O'Sullivan taking the first event under his belt, followed by young Judd Trump who shined in Gloucester. A very nice surprise followed up next, as Ben Woollaston won the first ranking event of his career (PTC 3), while Mark Selby conquered Germany's hearts and souls by taking the PTC 4 title (aka. Paul Hunter Classic).
The previous edition saw another player making his way into the world of winning his first pro title, Andrew Higginson being the latest acquisition of the PTCs.

Now, things are more serious than ever, especially for those who still have a place into the TOP 16 and have strong desire to keep it. If they will succeed or not, it is a question that will soon find its answer.

The usual pattern of having two days fully dedicated to the qualifying rounds will be broken, as only tomorrow we won't have our LIVE share of snooker. This means that with only one day for the qualifiers, the rest will grab our attention because ... what do you know?! This is an European event and you know what European events have? LIVE Eurosport coverage!!!

So from Friday on please tune in on EuroSport to support your favourite players. They will really need it.

Players Tour Championship Event 5 (2011) - Higginson wins his first pro title

23:54:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Andrew Higginson - the PTC 5 event champion
Andrew Higginson manages to win his first professional title after beating the current world champion, John Higgins, 4-1 in the final of this year's Players Tour Championship Event Five (PTC 5). This brings another new name to the list of PTC's champions.

Andrew Higginson cashes an important victory by winning his first ranking event, and more since it is obtained by defeating a four-time world champion.
The Englishman started the snooker journey with his right foot by performing a whitewash of 4-0 against Joe Meara, continued in straight line as he defeated the powerful Chinese XiaoGuodong by the same scoreline and booked a place into the Last 16 with a 4-1 applied on Players Tour Championship Event Three winner, Ben Woollaston.

John Higgins - the PTC 5 event runner-up
The final day found him dominating again, Ian McCulloch being his first victim (4-0), during the quarter-finals he beat the strategist Dave Harold by 4-2, while the semi-final was conquered with a simple 4-1 against Jack Lisowski.

On the other side, John Higgins, who qualified for the final day after beating David Grace 4-0, Michael Wasley 4-2 and his fellow country Alan McManus 4-1, was playing great also. He started his day with a 4-2 against the restless Ryan Day, continued by taking revenge of this week's Premier League match to Neil Robertson with a 4-1 result and finally booked himself a place in the final with another 4-1, this time by playing Barry Hawkins.

Higginson in action
And so the grand final was bringing together Andrew Higginson and John Higgins. Although after the first two frames the lads were all square at 1-1, it wasn't going to pass too much time until the 33-year-old player from Cheshire would fire in breaks of 78, 46 and 36 to take all the remaining frames and freeze the scoreline at 4-1 in his favour.

So after five days of cue battles we add another distinct name to the wall of fame: Andrew Higginson - the champion of PTC 5.
My sincere congratulations to both finalists (it was really great to see Higgins back in business and as sharp as we all know he can be), but also to all the other players that got out of their comfort zone and have given their best.

The next PTC will take place in Poland's Warsaw between September 29th and October 2nd. See you then, my dear snooker loopies!

Players Tour Championship Event 5 (2011) - Day 4

13:46:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

It was a loong, looong day (and night) in Sheffield for our beloved cueists as the last match finished somewhere around 1.30am (UK time). But regardless of this little, tiny aspect, it was a glorious day filled with high standard snooker and a lot of close results. A place in the Last 16 seems to be very desirable these days :-)

Two world-champions have signed their names on the Last 16 round list: Neil Robertson and John Higgins. Higgins seemed to have regained some strength after losing 3-0 to Robertson during this week's Premier League, as he started his journey with a perfect 4-0 over David Grace, continued with a 4-2 over Michael Wasley and finished by taking on his fellow-country, Alan McManus whom he beat 4-1.

Another PTC event, another Last 16 place for Yan
For Robertson things couldn't be any easier: the Australian crashed the youngster Eden Sharav 4-0, ended on a very tight 4-3 with India's great star Aditya Mehta, only to end his day by defeating another Scotsman, Scott Mackenzie 4-2. It’s true that Scott fought like a lion and managed to pull back two consecutive frames after being lead 3-0, but the 2010 world-champion was stronger and did his job in winning every match he could.

During PTC 4 event, Li Yan was practically on fire. He successfully defeated Michael Holt, Xiao Guodong and John Higgins to reach the Last 16 and it seems he enjoyed it so much that he decided to do it all over again. So with a 4-0 over the Polish player Kacper Filipiac, a 4-3 over Liu Chuang and a glorious 4-1 over Judd Trump, Li booked a place in the next round.

A good day for Day
It was a very prolific day for Ryan Day, the Welshman cashing victories over Kurt Maflin (4-0), Kyren Wilson (4-1) and Rod Lawler (4-0), but also for Martin Gould whose scorelines of 4-2 against Ashley Wright, 4-1 over Luca Brecel and 4-0 in front of the legendary Jimmy White, have guaranteed him to go further in the competition.

And since I mentioned the legend Jimmy White, I must also mention another one, "The Nugget" Steve Davis. Although Steve managed to win his first two matches (against Sean O'Sullivan and Adam Duffy), he was kneeled down by Michael Holt with a 4-1 scoreline. Actually this was Holt's last match of the day and this result along with the 4-1 he obtained in front of Chris Keogan and the 4-2 he performed on Robert Milkins secured him a place to meet Martin Gould in today's Last 16 round.

Hawkins - back in business
I was telling you at the beginning of this article that it was a long, long day and night in Sheffield and these following two players are to be blamed for that. Noooo, just kidding, the lads did their best in order to earn the last of the remaining two spots in the competition.

And so, Michael White's 4-3 against John Sutton, 4-2 over the Scot Ants McGill and a 4-1 in front on Dechawat Poomjaeng were enough to end the day as a victorious player, while for Barry Hawkins hammering Douglas Hogan 4-1, defeating Liang Wenbo 4-2 and ending on a very, very tight 4-3 with Stuart Bingham, surely did the trick.

Players Tour Championship Event 5 (2011) - Day 3

10:31:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Lisowski, finally in the Last 16
Great day for cue battles and twisted situations in Sheffield as the first day of the main PTC 5 event kicked off. Eight players hungry for winning occupied the first places that the Last 16 round has put up for grabs, for some of them being quite a premiere to go so far in the competition.

Believe it or not it was the case of young Jack Lisowski, who although took part in all the PTC's didn't succeed to book a Last 16 place. But his luck was going to change as he recorded three consecutive victories over Andy Hicks 4-2, Andrew Norman 4-3 and Peter Lines 4-3. I'm guessing that his fans are giving a party as you read these lines.

The Sheriff's got his eye on the prize
Another stranger to the Last 16 round is the mighty "Sheriff of Pottingham", Anthony Hamilton who successfully defeated all his opponents to catch the fast train to PTC 5's next round. The first stop was conquered with a tight 4-3 scoreline over Stephen Hendry, the second one with a perfect 4-0 over Simon Bedford and the last one with a 4-2 over Shaun Murphy.

Hendry, out of the TOP 16
Sadly, I must also mention that after losing that match, the Master Stephen Hendry is out of the Top 16, this happening for the first time in many, many years ... over twenty as far as I know. These will be hard times for the seven-time world champion who will see himself put in the position of qualifying for the events he wants to play in, after the seedings revision from October this year.

With a recently opened Twitter account, things are starting to look up for the English player, Ian McCulloch. Just kidding! He played beautifully yesterday and that got him a place next to the other two players I mentioned before. His journey started by beating Scotland's Marcus Campbell 4-1, continued with the same scoreline in front of Nigel Bong and ended with a 4-2 over Tom Ford. Great job you new Twiterer ... or whatever one should call a person who tweets. :-P

McCulloch's happy with his start
It was a really fructuous day for the Q School Event Three graduate, David Gilbert who not only qualify to go further in the competition, but he also hit the highest break of the event (so far), a brilliant 141. That actually marked the beginning of his day for he recorded that break during the match he played against Mike Hallett, whom he beat 4-1. Soon after that he managed to kneel down Ding Junhui 4-3 and put an end to Ian Burns' PTC dream with a 4-1.

David Gilbert
The PTC 1 finalist Joe Perry put quite a show by crashing Kishan Hirani and Peter Ebdon 4-0, only to end his day with a close 4-3 against Ricky Walden, while Scotland's "ice figure" (no, not Hendry!), Jamie Burnett hammered Martin O’Donnell 4-1, whitewashed Antony Parsons 4-0 and was made responsible for the exit or Robbie Williams, whom he beat 4-2. Can I just add that the music industry is really angry with that particular last match? :-))

Dave Harold,  or "the snooker strategist" as I like to call him, had another of his spectacular runs by beating Chris Norbury and Stephen Lee 4-3 (against Lee he came back from being lead 3-0), only to end his night covered in glory after defeating Graeme Dott 4-0. Now, that's something!
Andrew Higginson has also booked himself a place into the next round by crashing Joe Meara and Xiao Guodong 4-0 and hammering the PTC 3 winner, Ben Woollaston 4-1.

Players Tour Championship Event 5 (2011) - Day 2 (the qualifiers)

Allan Taylor
The second, and last day, of the qualifying rounds of this year's PTC 5 ended last evening by sending into the main event the most courageous cue gladiators. Although there were some surprises here and there the "traditional" pattern was partially respected.

Now, why do I say partially? One of the reasons is that although Allan Taylor managed to book himself a place into the next round after beating Lee Farebrother 4-1, Ben Harrison was whitewashed 4-0 by Stephen Craigie. And we all know that we were kind of used to see these two lads going hand in hand. Still, Craigie is a tough opponent and yesterday's victory proves is.

Moving on, the Thai with the endless name, Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon put an end to China's Chen Zhe run with a 4-1 scoreline. Not to worry though, for Zhang Anda moved into the main event due to his 4-0 result over Lee Page.

A glorious day for David Grace who beat Joe Walker by 4-3, for Martin O'Donnell who cashed yet another victory this time in front of Michael Leslie, 4-0, but also for Chris Norbury who continued his great journey through the balls with a 4-2 scoreline against Justin Astley and for Kyren Wilson, who registered the same result by playing Hans Blanckaert.

Double T
Scotland's Eden Sharav booked himself a snooker meeting with Neil Robertson after defeating Marc Davis 4-2, while Northern Ireland's Patrick Wallace is set to face PTC 3 winner, Ben Woollaston after hammering Jamie O'Neill 4-1.

But not everyone will continue to fight on the Sheffield’s fields, for Nick Jennings lost the decisive frame in front of Douglas Hogan, while Reanne Evans was defeated 2-4 by Mitchell Travis.
