UK Championship (2011) Day 5 - Fu sees off world number one
Marco Fu sees off Mark Selby |
The season
started in the best possible way for Mark Selby who won the Wuxi Classic, then
the Shanghai Masters, but also Players Tour Championship Event 4 (aka. Paul
Hunter Classic). At the UK Championship he had a brilliant start by
whitewashing Ryan Day 6-0. Still, during the snooker meeting with Marco Fu, he
didn't seem as focused as before and his game wasn't a fluent one.
Fu took
control of the match 2-0 with a top break of 52 while the Englishman was doomed
to make one mistake after another. Still, the interval was going to find the
boys all square up at 2-2, as Selby regained some form to hit in breaks of 51
and 102. This was more like it: we were in for a tight snooker encounter.
Selby bouncing a black off the table |
The only
frame Selby did win after the interval was the 7th one. Runs of 43
and 32 were bringing a bit of hope into Leicester
man's heart, but unfortunately for him and fortunately for Marco that wasn't
enough.
Fu won the
next frame on the black and was lucky enough as to fluke a red during the last
frame to keep building himself a nice break of 85 that was his ticket to the
quarter-finals.
Mark Allen lands safely in the QFs |
Runs of 34
and 36 were enough to win him the 5th frame, but Allen's 70 break was
restoring the two frames difference.
One more time Carter tried to take a stand by hitting a 48, but Allen responded with a 56 break and a series of 26, 22 and 20 to seal his victory at 6-2. The Captain was flying home, while Allen was flying in the quarter-finals were he's meeting Marco Fu.
