The Alexandra Palace welcomed back Captain Ali Carter with a standing ovation and the Englishman repaid his audience with a brilliant 6-1 victory over Barry Hawkins.

Carter, who's been given the "all clear" from his doctor and after missing out most of the snooker tournaments, came back as a revived man and player, only to stun us all with his strength of character.

The Captain took off with a beautifully cued 95 clearance to which he added the coming frame to go 2-0 up before Hawkins won a dramatic third frame on the colours.

The 2012 Australian Goldfield Open champion seemed in control of the next frame, but a poor positional shot made him miss the blue, thus leaving the coast clear for a fierce Carter who won it after doubling the black.

Minutes after the mini-break, Carter fired in runs of 36 and 39 to go 4-1 up, cleared the table with an outstanding 130 and added a 48 in frame seven to close the deal at 6-1. He now faces Neil Robertson in the quarter-finals.

A terrific performance from a man who beat a horrendous disease not once, but twice. Welcome back Captain!
