The second day of the 2016 Betfred World Championship saw another two top-seeded players saying their goodbyes to a place in the next round, both Shaun Murphy and Stephen Maguire coming short of victory.

Stephen Maguire had to face fellow countryman Alan McManus who got a pretty strong lead of 6-3 overnight and managed to extend it at 7-3 just as the second session kicked off.

Maguire used top breaks of 58 and 97 to win no less than three consecutive frames, but when his opponent knocked in runs of 65 and 77 to go 9-6 up, things looked pretty ominous.

Just one more frame was to go Maguire's way before McManus closed the deal with a top break of 63 for a well-deserved 10-7 victory which guarantees him a place in the Last 16.

Unfortunately for Maguire this also means that he will lose his Top 16 position at the end of the current season.

Shaun Murphy lost 10-8 to Scotland's Anthony McGill in a re-match of last year's quarter-final, with the only difference that this time Shaun was the one sent packing. You can read more on this, here.

Ronnie O'Sullivan met David Gilbert and despite what the majority of the people thought, this was a pretty balanced first session, although it ended in favour of "The Rocket" who is leading 6-3.

The first name on the scoreboard was Gilbert's, but when Ronnie fired in breaks of 72, 84 and 71 things were looking pretty dark.

Still, Gilbert used a top break of 91 to pull back a frame and was about to draw level when he was forced to stop his break at 56, this allowing Ronnie to come to the table and clinch the frame for a 4-2 lead.

A tremendous 125 clearance from Dave was assuring everyone present that the boy means serious business, but in the end it was O'Sullivan who finished in the leading position thanks to breaks of 54 and 71.

Mark Williams holds a lot of power over Scotsman Graeme Dott after ending their first session 7-2, while Sam Baird has a slight advantage of 5-4 over his opponent Michael White.
